This year’s Fat Tire Festival and 6 hours of Hamilton Creek mountain bike race is only two weeks away! Harpeth Bicycles is the title sponsor this year and couldn’t be more proud to be working with SORBA Mid Tennessee, Ride for Reading, Red Bull, and many others to bring this event back for another year.
Along with food and family fun, Jamis Bicycles will be present with a fleet of demo bikes, and there will be a raffle for a Trek 69er mountain bike donated by Woody’s Bicycles with all proceeds going to benefit Ride for Reading.
Tim Spencer from SORBA Mid Tennessee answered a few questions about the event for us.
How did the Fat Tire Festival/6 Hours of Ham start?
Fat Tire Festival at Hamilton Creek was started in 2003 by Dan Hensley and one of the things that happened that day was the announcement that Long Hunter State Park would allow us to build some mountain bike trails there.
How many people have attended in the past, and what kind of atmosphere should people expect?
A typical event can have anywhere from 100-150 people. Attendees can expect a festival atmosphere, clinics, friendly members of the mountain bike community, events for kids that are able to ride a bike and at least one group ride.
Some highlights are the “Hill Climb” (see video below) event where we take a very difficult and technical part of the trail and see who can climb it the fastest. There is also some original events that our community created such as the “Skid Game” and the “Parent-Child Relay.” This is an event that is just as fun to spectate as it is to participate in.
